Kalamazoo State Theatre to close at the end of November
Current owners seek out 'next stewards' for historic venue
Customers given one month to use gift certificates
KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Kalamazoo State Theatre will close its doors at the end of the month, its current owners announced Friday. The theater's last day of operation will be Nov. 27.
Owners Mary and Michael Moore said in a statement that they have been "actively seeking new ownership" for the theater since 2019, but have been unsuccessful in finding a buyer. They said they have decided to close the theater rather than continue to operate it at a loss.
"This was not an easy decision," the Moores said. "We love the Kalamazoo State Theatre, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have been its owners for the past 13 years."
The Moores said they are hopeful that the theater will remain open under new ownership. They said they are working with a real estate agent to find a buyer who is "committed to preserving the theater's historic character and its role as a performing arts venue."
The Kalamazoo State Theatre is a historic venue that has been operating since 1927. It is one of the few remaining single-screen movie theaters in the United States.
The theater has been the site of many memorable events over the years, including concerts by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan.
The Moores said they are committed to working with customers to ensure that they can use their gift certificates before the theater closes. They said customers can use their gift certificates for tickets to any remaining shows or for merchandise at the theater's gift shop.
The Kalamazoo State Theatre is located at 404 S. Burdick St. in downtown Kalamazoo.
