Kikau Completes Bounce-Back Season with Dr George Peponis Medal

Kikau wins by three votes over Young, Burton

Penrith forward Viliame Kikau has made a remarkable comeback to form in 2023, winning Penrith's Dr George Peponis Medal.

Kikau received 41 votes, three more than in-form back Stephen Crichton and departed halfback Sean O'Sullivan, who tied for second with 25 votes.

A foot injury restricted Kikau to just 12 games in 2022, but he returned to play a starring role in Penrith's grand final triumph over Parramatta.

The 28-year-old's impressive season was recognised when he received the Greg Alexander Player of the Year award for best on ground in the grand final.

His form continued into the international season, where he helped inspire the Kiwis to victory in the end-of-year tournament.

"I'm lost for words," Kikau said.

"A lot of credit goes to the coaching staff and my teammates."

"I've learnt to live in the present and take each day as it comes, and I think that's helped me a lot with my footy and family life."

Brimson wins Jack Gibson Medal

Cronulla young gun Bronson Xerri has taken out Cronulla's Jack Gibson Medal as the Sharks' best and fairest player.

Xerri carried the Sharks to the finals for the second time in as many years with a stunning breakout season.

He led the competition for tries (23) and tackle busts (108) in the regular season before scoring two tries in the Sharks' elimination final victory over Canberra.

The 21-year-old's strong season also earned him Australian selection, with the centre making his Test debut against Tonga in October.
