What happened?

On Tuesday evening, February 28, 2023, residents in the Clifton neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, reported hearing an explosion. Police and fire crews responded to the scene and found significant damage to a home in the 2200 block of Brownsboro Road near Grinstead Drive.

The blast reportedly occurred around 6:30 p.m. and caused the home to partially collapse. Two people were inside the house at the time of the explosion and were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

What caused the explosion?

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) spokesperson Dwight Mitchell said that it may have been caused by a gas leak.

Mitchell said that LG&E crews were called to the scene to shut off the gas supply to the home. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information is available at this time.

LMPD has set up a "triage area" in the 2200 block of Brownsboro Road to assist residents who have been affected by the explosion.

The Red Cross is also on the scene to provide assistance to those in need. Brownsboro Road is currently closed between Grinstead Drive and Eastern Parkway.
