Mike Huckabee To Replace David Friedman As US Ambassador To Israel
By Savannah Walsh
Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is reportedly set to replace David Friedman as the US ambassador to Israel, multiple sources confirmed to the Forward. Two sources told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the announcement could come as early as next week. The White House has not yet commented on the matter.
Friedman's Replacement
Friedman, a bankruptcy lawyer and Trump loyalist, has served as the US ambassador to Israel since 2017, and has been a controversial figure throughout his tenure. He has repeatedly clashed with American Jewish leaders and has been criticized for his support of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Friedman is expected to leave his post by the end of the year.
Huckabee's Evangelical Ties
Huckabee, a Republican, is a prominent evangelical Christian leader, and has strong ties to Israel. He has visited Israel numerous times and has met with Israeli leaders on several occasions. Huckabee is also a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, and has defended Trump's policies on Israel, including the decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem.
Huckabee's Support for Israel
Huckabee has been a strong supporter of Israel throughout his career. In 2008, he said that "Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East and we need to support them." He has also said that "Israel is a beacon of hope in a troubled region." If confirmed, Huckabee will be the first evangelical Christian to serve as US ambassador to Israel.
Controversy
Huckabee's nomination is likely to be met with controversy. Some critics have questioned his qualifications for the post, and have expressed concern about his support for Israeli settlements. Others have praised Huckabee's strong support for Israel, and have said that he would be a valuable asset to the US-Israel relationship.
