Netanyahu Seeks to Delay Testifying in Corruption Trial
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to delay taking the stand in his corruption trial due to a lack of time to prepare during the recent war with Hamas in Gaza.
The request was made to the Jerusalem District Court on Sunday, a day before Netanyahu was scheduled to begin testifying in the case.
In a statement, Netanyahu's lawyers said that the prime minister had been "deeply involved" in the war effort and had not had sufficient time to prepare for his testimony.
The lawyers also argued that the court should delay the trial until after the next Israeli election, which is scheduled for November 1.
The prosecution, however, opposed the request, arguing that Netanyahu had had ample time to prepare for his testimony and that the trial should proceed as scheduled.
The court is expected to rule on Netanyahu's request on Monday.
Netanyahu is facing three corruption charges, including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. He has denied all charges and has said that he is the victim of a political witch hunt.
The trial is expected to last for several months and could potentially derail Netanyahu's political career.
