One Third of Babies Born to Overseas Mothers
New Data Reveals the Scale of a Growing Trend
New data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that one third of babies born in China in 2022 were born to overseas mothers. This is a significant increase from previous years, and it reflects a growing trend of Chinese women choosing to have children abroad.
The NBS data shows that the number of babies born to overseas mothers in China has increased by more than 50% since 2015. In 2022, there were over 1 million babies born to overseas mothers, compared to just 650,000 in 2015.
Why are Chinese women choosing to have children abroad?
There are a number of reasons why Chinese women are choosing to have children abroad.
- Access to better healthcare: Many Chinese women believe that they will receive better healthcare for themselves and their babies if they give birth abroad.
- Desire for a foreign passport: Some Chinese women choose to have children abroad so that their children can have a foreign passport. This can give them access to better education, healthcare, and job opportunities.
- Escape from the one-child policy: China's one-child policy, which was in place from 1979 to 2015, limited couples to having only one child. This policy led to a shortage of women of childbearing age, and it also made it difficult for women to have multiple children.
The trend of Chinese women choosing to have children abroad is likely to continue in the years to come. As more Chinese women become aware of the benefits of giving birth abroad, it is expected that the number of babies born to overseas mothers will continue to increase.
