Scouting the Hawks
The Saint Joseph's Hawks are coming off a 15-14 season in 2022-23. The Hawks are led by head coach Cindy Griffin, who is in her fourth season at the helm of the program. Saint Joseph's returns three starters from last season's team, including senior guard Katie Jekot and junior forward Laila Fair.
Jekot is the Hawks' leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 14.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season. Fair is a versatile forward who can score inside and out, averaging 12.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season.
The Hawks also have a talented group of newcomers, including freshman guard Alyssa Monaghan and junior forward Mackenzie Smith. Monaghan is a highly touted recruit who is expected to contribute immediately for the Hawks. Smith is a transfer from George Washington University who brings experience and leadership to the team.
Keys to the Game
The Orange will need to play well in the paint to defeat the Hawks. Saint Joseph's has a size advantage over Syracuse, so the Orange will need to crash the boards and limit the Hawks' second-chance opportunities.
Syracuse will also need to take care of the basketball. The Hawks are a good defensive team that forces turnovers, so the Orange will need to be careful with their passes and limit their mistakes.
If the Orange can play well in the paint and take care of the basketball, they will be in a good position to win their season opener.
