Potential Chicago Cubs Catching Target Inks Deal With Los Angeles Angels
Angels Acquire Tucker Barnhart In Trade With Tigers
Barnhart A Three-Time Gold Glove Winner
The Los Angeles Angels have acquired catcher Tucker Barnhart from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for cash considerations, the team announced Tuesday.
Barnhart, a three-time Gold Glove winner, was a key target for the Cubs this offseason as they looked to upgrade their catching position heading into the 2023 campaign.
The 32-year-old is coming off a down year at the plate, hitting just .221/.304/.341 with five home runs and 43 RBIs in 107 games with the Tigers.
However, Barnhart is still considered one of the best defensive catchers in the game, and his addition should give the Angels a significant boost behind the plate.
The Cubs, meanwhile, will now likely turn their attention to other free-agent catchers on the market, such as Christian Vazquez or Mike Zunino.
