Saint Joseph's 84, Syracuse 70: Orange women's basketball handled at home by St. Joe's
Syracuse slides to 1-3 following nonconference defeat
After earning their first win of the season just three days prior, the Orange women's basketball team (1-3) took a step back with an 84-70 loss to Saint Joseph's (3-1) Wednesday night inside the JMA Wireless Dome.
Despite a career-high 25 points from redshirt junior guard Teisha Hyman, Syracuse was unable to keep pace with the visiting Hawks, who shot 53.8% (30-for-56) from the floor and buried 10 three-pointers in the victory.
Slow start dooms Orange
Syracuse trailed by just one possession, 19-17, after one quarter of play, but Saint Joseph's opened up a 14-point lead by halftime.
The Hawks shot a blistering 63.6% (14-for-22) from the field in the second quarter, including 6-of-10 from three-point range, as Syracuse struggled to keep pace offensively. The Orange shot just 38.5% (10-for-26) in the first half and committed seven turnovers.
Saint Joseph's pushed its lead to as many as 21 points in the third quarter and was never truly threatened by the Orange down the stretch.
Hyman leads Syracuse scorers
Redshirt junior guard Teisha Hyman led all scorers with a career-high 25 points on 8-for-16 shooting, including 4-for-9 from three-point range. Hyman has now scored in double figures in all four games this season and has led the Orange in scoring three times.
Redshirt sophomore guard Amaya Finklea-Guity added 14 points off the bench for Syracuse, while redshirt junior center Kamilla Cardoso chipped in 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Turnovers continue to be an issue
Syracuse committed 17 turnovers in the loss, continuing a trend that has plagued the Orange through the first four games of the season. Syracuse has now committed 70 turnovers this year, an average of 17.5 per game.
The Hawks converted those turnovers into 22 points, a major factor in the outcome of the game.
Next up for Syracuse
The Orange will be back in action on Sunday, November 20, when they travel to take on No. 11 Baylor in Waco, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
