Saint Joseph's Shocks Syracuse in Women's Basketball
Orange Suffer First Home Loss of the Season
The Syracuse Orange women's basketball team suffered their first home loss of the season on Sunday, falling to Saint Joseph's 84-70 in the Carrier Dome. The Hawks, who entered the game with a 5-6 record, shot 50% from the field and outrebounded the Orange 44-34.
Syracuse (8-3) was led by Dyaisha Fair, who finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Teisha Hyman added 16 points, and Nyah Green chipped in 12. Saint Joseph's was paced by Katie Jekot, who had 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Slow Start Dooms Orange
The Orange got off to a slow start, falling behind 10-0 in the first four minutes of the game. They trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half and were never able to recover.
Syracuse coach Felisha Legette-Jack was disappointed with her team's effort.
"We didn't come out with the same energy and intensity that we have in the past," she said. "We were flat, and we didn't execute our game plan."
The Orange will look to bounce back on Wednesday when they host Colgate at the Carrier Dome.
3-Pointers Key for Hawks
Saint Joseph's hit 10 3-pointers in the game, including six in the first half. The Hawks shot 43% from beyond the arc.
"We knew that Syracuse was a good defensive team," said Saint Joseph's coach Cindy Griffin. "We wanted to make them work on the defensive end, and we were able to do that by hitting some 3s."
The Orange, meanwhile, were just 5-of-20 from 3-point range.
Rebounding Woes Continue
Syracuse has been outrebounded in three of its last four games. The Orange were outrebounded by 10 in their loss to Saint Joseph's.
"We're not getting the job done on the boards," Legette-Jack said. "We need to be tougher and more physical in the paint."
The Orange will need to improve their rebounding if they want to compete with the top teams in the ACC.
What's Next?
Syracuse will host Colgate on Wednesday, December 21st at the Carrier Dome. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. ET.
