Singtel to close five legacy data centers in Singapore amid green push

Telco giant to shut down older facilities by 2025, consolidate operations in newer, more efficient data centers

Move part of Singtel's broader sustainability strategy, which includes reducing carbon emissions and promoting circular economy practices

Singtel is set to close five of its legacy data centers in Singapore by 2025, The Business Times reported on Wednesday (Aug. 10).

The move is part of the telecommunications giant's broader sustainability strategy, which includes reducing carbon emissions and promoting circular economy practices.

The five data centers that will be closed are located at Changi North, Tai Seng, Toa Payoh, Kallang, and Braddell.

Singtel will consolidate its operations in three newer, more efficient data centers at Defu, Jurong West, and Tuas, which were built in recent years.

The company said that the consolidation will allow it to reduce its energy consumption and carbon emissions, as well as improve the efficiency of its data center operations.

Singtel's sustainability strategy also includes initiatives to reduce waste and promote the use of renewable energy.

The company has set a target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Singtel's move to close its legacy data centers is in line with the Singapore government's push for sustainability.

The government has set a target of reducing the country's carbon emissions by 36 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030.

The government has also launched a number of initiatives to promote the adoption of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies.

Singtel's sustainability strategy is also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by all United Nations member states in 2015.

The goals cover a wide range of issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, and climate change.

Singtel's sustainability strategy contributes to the achievement of several SDGs, including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
