SMU Screwjob? CFP committee laying groundwork to leave out the Mustangs
SMU has run the table in a conference that has traditionally placed at least one team in the College Football Playoff.
It's championship week for the Group of Five conferences and SMU looks like the favorite in the AAC. The Mustangs (10-2) are ranked 15th in the CFP rankings, but they're not in the top 12, which is the cutoff for the Playoff.
If SMU wins the AAC title, they will likely finish the season 11-2.
However, the CFP committee has made it clear that they don't believe the AAC is as strong as the other Power Five conferences.
That means that even if SMU wins out, they're unlikely to make the Playoff, which would be a major disappointment for the Mustangs and their fans.
The AAC has been left out of the College Football Playoff before.
In 2019, Cincinnati was left out of the Playoff despite finishing the season 13-0. The Bearcats were ranked No. 8 in the final CFP rankings.
The CFP committee's decision to leave out Cincinnati was controversial and it led to many people questioning the fairness of the Playoff system.
If SMU is left out of the Playoff this year, it will only add to the controversy surrounding the CFP's selection process.
The Mustangs have a strong case to be included in the Playoff. They're undefeated in conference play and they have a solid resume of wins over quality opponents.
