A Spirit Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale to Haiti was diverted to the Dominican Republic on Monday after being struck by gunfire, the airline said.
Spirit Airlines flight 383 departed Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport at 7:07 p.m. ET Monday and was scheduled to arrive at Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, at 8:45 p.m. ET.
However, the flight was diverted to Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, after being struck by gunfire, according to a statement from Spirit Airlines.
The plane landed safely
The plane landed safely in Santo Domingo at 8:35 p.m. ET, and no injuries were reported.
Passengers and crew reported hearing popping noises during the flight, according to the airline.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident.
Spirit Airlines is offering assistance to passengers
Spirit Airlines is offering assistance to passengers who were on the flight, including meal vouchers and hotel accommodations.
The airline said it is working to rebook passengers on other flights to Haiti.
In a statement, Spirit Airlines said it is "committed to the safety of our passengers and crew members." The airline said it is "cooperating fully with the FAA's investigation."
