A Tough Loss for the Orange
The Syracuse Orange women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Monday night, falling to the Maryland Terrapins 70-59. The Orange had won their first five games of the season, but were unable to overcome a strong performance from the Terrapins.
Maryland was led by Kaila Charles, who scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Shakira Austin also had a strong game for the Terrapins, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
A Slow Start for Syracuse
Syracuse got off to a slow start in the game, trailing 16-6 after the first quarter. The Orange were able to close the gap to 30-27 at halftime, but Maryland pulled away in the second half.
The Orange shot just 38.5% from the field and 28.6% from three-point range. They were also outrebounded by Maryland 44-31.
A Tough Night for Tiana Mangakahia
Tiana Mangakahia, Syracuse's leading scorer, had a tough night against Maryland. She finished with just 10 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
Mangakahia is one of the best players in the country, but she was unable to get going against Maryland's tough defense.

The loss drops Syracuse to 5-1 on the season. The Orange will be back in action on Thursday night when they host the Boston College Eagles.
