Tarleton State upsets Florida State in men’s basketball
D-1 newcomer Tarleton upsets ACC foe Florida State
In a major upset, the Tarleton State Texans, a newcomer to Division I, defeated the Florida State Seminoles in men's basketball on Tuesday night. The Texans won 72-69 in overtime, handing the Seminoles their first loss of the season.
Tarleton State was led by guard Montre Gipson, who scored 20 points. Forward Josh Mballa added 15 points and 10 rebounds, and guard Shamir Bogues had 13 points.
Florida State was led by guard Caleb Mills, who scored 18 points. Forward M.J. Walker added 14 points, and center Dominik Olejniczak had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Tarleton State makes history
The win was a historic one for Tarleton State, which is in its first season as a Division I program. The Texans are now 2-0 this season, and they have already picked up a major win over a Power Five conference opponent.
Tarleton State's win is also a sign of the growing strength of mid-major programs in college basketball. In recent years, mid-majors have had more and more success against Power Five conference teams.
Florida State looks to bounce back
Florida State will look to bounce back from its loss to Tarleton State when it hosts the Citadel on Friday night. The Seminoles are still one of the top teams in the ACC, and they should be considered a contender for the national championship.
However, Florida State will need to play better than it did against Tarleton State. The Seminoles turned the ball over 15 times and shot just 38.5% from the field.
If Florida State can clean up its mistakes, it should be able to get back on track against the Citadel. However, if the Seminoles continue to struggle, they could be in for a long season.
