Three Key Tests for a Just and Secure Net Zero Future
Three key tests for a just and secure net zero future
Three key tests for a just and secure net zero future were recently released at the 12th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM12/MI-6). These tests will assist countries in the assessment of their climate and energy plans.
The three key tests are:
- Accelerating clean energy transitions.
- Improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
- Ensuring a just and equitable transition.
The Net-Zero Transitions Council developed these tests to provide a common framework for countries to use when considering their climate and energy plans.
Accelerating clean energy transitions
The first test is designed to evaluate a country’s progress in transitioning to clean energy. This includes assessing their adoption of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. It also considers the reduction in fossil fuel use.
Countries should strive to increase their use of renewable energy sources while simultaneously reducing their reliance on fossil fuels. This will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
Improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption
The second test evaluates a country's progress in improving energy efficiency and reducing energy consumption. This can be achieved by implementing energy efficiency measures in buildings, industry, and transportation.
Energy efficiency measures can help to reduce energy consumption without sacrificing economic growth.
Ensuring a just and equitable transition
The third test is designed to ensure that the transition to net zero is just and equitable. This includes considering the impact of climate change on vulnerable populations and providing support for workers and communities who are affected by the transition.
A just and equitable transition is one that leaves no one behind. It ensures that the benefits of the transition are shared by all, and that the costs are borne fairly.
