Volcanic Eruption Warning: Mt. Gareloi M2.0
Immediate Evacuation Ordered as Alert Level Raised to Red
WARNING: EXTREME DANGER - IMMEDIATE EVACUATION ADVISED
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has issued an urgent warning of an impending volcanic explosion at Mt. Gareloi. A seismic swarm detected beneath the volcano's surface indicates that magma is on the move.
An eruption magnitude 2.0 has been triggered, prompting authorities to raise the Alert Level to RED, indicating an imminent and certain eruption.
WHAT TO DO:
Immediate evacuation is strongly advised for all residents within the affected area, located within a 10-mile radius of the volcano.
Evacuees are advised to proceed to designated safe zones and follow instructions from local emergency officials. Motorists should avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
Volcanic eruptions can unleash a range of hazards, including:
- Explosive eruptions, sending ash clouds miles into the atmosphere
- Pyroclastic flows, characterized by rapidly moving clouds of hot gas and ash
- Lava flows, with the potential to destroy structures and infrastructure
Ashfall from the eruption can pose respiratory threats and disrupt infrastructure, while volcanic gas emissions can create toxic air conditions. Residents are advised to stay indoors and seal windows and doors to minimize exposure.
