Whangārei residents are being urged to be vigilant after a spate of car fires in the city.

Police are investigating a series of suspicious blazes that have occurred in recent weeks, and are appealing for information from the public.

The latest incident occurred on Monday night, when a car was set alight on Tarewa Road. The fire spread to a nearby house, causing significant damage.

Detective Senior Sergeant Simon Barclay said the investigation was ongoing, but police were treating the fires as suspicious.

"We are asking the public to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police," he said.

"We are also urging people to take steps to protect their vehicles, such as parking them in well-lit areas and ensuring they are locked and alarmed."
