Wildlife Crossing Construction Update Released for Urban Wildlife Week
Collaborative Project Nears Completion for safer wildlife movement
Local organizers with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the National Park Service have announced an update on the construction of the wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon. The project which began construction in 2021, is set to be completed in 2025 and will provide a safe passage for wildlife to cross under Highway 101.
Current Construction Progress
As of May 2023, the wildlife crossing project is nearing completion. Crews have finished constructing the two wildlife underpasses, and are currently working on the final touches, such as landscaping and fencing. The project is on schedule and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
Benefits to Local Wildlife and Environment
The Liberty Canyon Wildlife Crossing is a crucial project for the local ecosystem. The crossing will allow wildlife to safely cross under Highway 101, which has been a major barrier to movement for many species. The crossing will also help to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, which are a common occurrence in the area.
In addition to the benefits to wildlife, the crossing will also provide recreational opportunities for people. The area around the crossing will be landscaped with native plants, and there will be trails for people to walk, bike, or jog.
Upcoming Events and Community Involvement
To celebrate the progress of the wildlife crossing project, Caltrans and the National Park Service will be hosting a series of events during Urban Wildlife Week, which runs from May 14-20, 2023. These events will include guided walks of the construction site, educational talks about wildlife and the importance of wildlife crossings, and opportunities for the public to get involved in the project.
