Yoga Guru Sharath Jois Dies Aged 53
Tributes have been paid to famed yoga instructor Sharath Jois, who died at the age of 53.
Jois was the grandson of yoga master K. Pattabhi Jois, who founded the Ashtanga yoga style, and was known for his rigorous and disciplined approach to the practice.
He taught yoga to celebrities including Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, and ran a yoga school in Mysore, India, which attracted students from all over the world.
Jois's death was announced on his school's website, which said he had died "unexpectedly" on Tuesday.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Jois was born in Mysore in 1969 and began practicing yoga at the age of seven.
He took over the running of his grandfather's yoga school in 1999, and under his leadership, the school became one of the most prestigious yoga centers in the world.
Jois was known for his demanding teaching style, and his students often praised his ability to push them to their limits.
He was also a prolific writer, and published several books on yoga, including "Yoga Mala" and "Ashtanga Yoga: An Exploration of the Primary Series."
