Well-known TV star 'bereaved' as BBC axes iconic show after 24 years
TV star Craig Charles has said he is "absolutely heartbroken" after the BBC announced it is axing his show, Robot Wars.
The show, which has been on air for 24 years, will end after the current series. Charles has presented the show since 2016.
In a statement, Charles said: "I'm absolutely heartbroken that Robot Wars is coming to an end. It's been an incredible journey and I've loved every minute of it."
"I want to thank all the fans who have supported the show over the years. You've made it all possible."
The BBC said in a statement: "Robot Wars has been a much-loved part of the BBC Two schedule for many years. However, after 24 series, we have decided to end the show."
"We would like to thank Craig Charles and all the teams who have taken part over the years. We wish them all the best for the future."
Robot Wars is a televised combat sport competition in which teams of amateur and professional engineers design and build remote-controlled robots to fight in an arena. The show has been a ratings success for the BBC, with an average audience of over 2 million viewers.
The BBC's decision to axe the show has been met with dismay by many fans. A petition to save the show has been launched on Change.org, and has already gathered over 100,000 signatures.
One fan, who has signed the petition, said: "Robot Wars is a great show that the whole family can enjoy. It's a shame to see it go."
Another fan said: "I've been watching Robot Wars since I was a kid. It's a great show that's both entertaining and educational."
It is not yet known if Robot Wars will be picked up by another broadcaster.
