Dallas Mavericks Trade For P.J. Washington
Mavs Acquire Frontcourt Depth in Deal with Hornets
The Dallas Mavericks have acquired forward P.J. Washington from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for a protected 2029 first-round pick, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The trade is expected to be finalized after the two teams complete medicals.
Washington Provides Mavs With Versatility
Washington, 24, is a versatile forward who can play both power forward and center. He is averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game this season for the Hornets. Washington is also a solid three-point shooter, hitting 37.4% from beyond the arc this season.
Mavs Bolster Frontcourt Rotation
The Mavericks have been looking to add depth to their frontcourt rotation, and Washington should help in that regard. He can play alongside Christian Wood at the power forward position or slide over to center when Wood is at power forward. Washington's versatility will give the Mavericks more options on the defensive end as well.
Hornets Get Future Asset
The Hornets, meanwhile, get a protected first-round pick in the deal. The pick is protected 1-14, meaning that if the Mavericks make the playoffs this season, the Hornets will get the pick in the 2029 draft. If the Mavericks miss the playoffs, the pick will roll over to the 2030 draft.
Trade Benefits Both Teams
The trade is a good one for both teams. The Mavericks get a versatile frontcourt player who can help them compete for a playoff spot. The Hornets get a future asset that they can use to rebuild their team.
