Philadelphia Big 5 to start off this upcoming week
The Villanova Wildcats and Saint Joseph's Hawks open the 2023-24 Philadelphia Big 5 season on Tuesday night at Finneran Pavilion.
Villanova and Saint Joseph's are two of the most successful programs in Big 5 history. The Wildcats have won a record 29 Big 5 titles, while the Hawks have won 16.
Last season, Villanova finished 12-19 overall and 4-14 in the Big East. Saint Joseph's finished 14-17 overall and 7-11 in the Atlantic 10.
Both teams are looking to improve on their records from last season. Villanova has a new coach in Kyle Neptune, who was previously the head coach at Fordham. Saint Joseph's has a new coach in Billy Lange, who was previously the head coach at Wagner.
Villanova seeks to improve Big 5 record
Villanova has not won the Philadelphia Big 5 since 2018, and has just one title in the last 3 seasons after winning 6 in a row between 2013-18.
The Wildcats will be led by senior guard Caleb Daniels, who averaged 16.0 points per game last season. Villanova also has a talented group of newcomers, including freshman guard Mark Armstrong and freshman forward Cam Whitmore.
Saint Joseph's will be led by senior guard Erik Reynolds II, who averaged 15.5 points per game last season. The Hawks also have a talented group of newcomers, including freshman guard Jameer Nelson Jr. and freshman forward Lynn Greer III.
Matchup could define season for both Villanova and Saint Joseph’s
The game between Villanova and Saint Joseph's is always a competitive one. Both teams are located in Philadelphia, and the fans are passionate about their teams.
The winner of the game will earn an early advantage in the Big 5 standings. A win for Villanova would also give them a boost of confidence heading into the rest of the season.
The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
